Dive into Sustainability: The Wave of Eco-Friendly Swimwear

on

In the ever-growing wave of environmental consciousness, the fashion industry is making significant strides toward sustainability, and swimwear is no exception. As concerns about the impact of fast fashion and synthetic materials on our planet rise, consumers are on the hunt for eco-friendly alternatives for their beach and poolside attire.

The Environmental Impact of Conventional Swimwear

Traditional swimwear often relies on materials like nylon and polyester, derived from petroleum-based sources. The production of these fabrics contributes to greenhouse gas emissions and pollution, while their slow decomposition further burdens landfills. Additionally, the dyeing and finishing processes involved in creating vibrant swimsuit designs can be harmful to water ecosystems.

Eco-Friendly Materials Making a Splash

Enter the era of sustainable swimwear, where brands are incorporating innovative materials into their designs. Fabrics made from recycled materials, such as recycled polyester or nylon, give a second life to discarded plastic bottles or fishing nets (think: Repreve and Econyl). Organic cotton and hemp are also gaining popularity for their reduced environmental footprint.

When Do Good Swimwear first started, it was one of the few swimwear brands that started off with those sustainable practices and materials in mind. Now, most swim brands have adopted these practices and there are tons of great options for different tastes and styles!

Ethical Production Practices

Sustainability goes beyond materials. Many eco-conscious swimwear brands are embracing ethical production practices. This includes fair labor conditions, transparent supply chains, and a commitment to reducing waste in manufacturing processes. By prioritizing ethical standards, these brands strive to create a positive impact on both the environment and the people involved in the production.

Do Good Swimwear has always, and will always, commit to ethical production practices. We are a small, women owned and run business, and have such small production collections, we are able to ensure that every step of the process is low waste and every worker is paid well above living wages, working in good environments with hours that suit their lifestyles, and emphasize work/ life balance. Without our partners, we wouldn't be here, so we truly want to make sure everyone is being treated and paid well!

Biodegradable Alternatives

Most sustainable swim brands use recycled or regenerated materials, such as ECONYL and Repreve, which both provide fabric made out of waste materials that is ready to go for beautiful and soft swimwear.

Some forward-thinking brands are exploring biodegradable materials for swimwear, presenting an exciting frontier in sustainable fashion. Materials like Tencel or other plant-based fibers offer the potential for swimsuits that break down naturally, minimizing their impact on the environment once their life cycle concludes.

Do Good Swimwear is currently exploring the option of Amni Soul Eco, a new biodegradable yarn that can decompose in a landfill under anaerobic conditions.

Extending the Life of Swimwear

Sustainability is not only about the materials but also about encouraging longevity. Brands are promoting durability and timeless designs to reduce the frequency of swimwear replacements. Educating consumers on proper care, such as avoiding excessive chlorine exposure and washing with eco-friendly detergents, contributes to extending the life of swimwear.

Econyl has an amazing take back program with a few different partners, including Speedo, Gucci and Napapijri. Read more here: https://www.econyl.com/blog/special-take-back-projects/

We are proud to offer a repair program, Take Back program, and encourage customers to donate old swimwear to Bras for a Cause or gift it to a friend who might like it instead of throwing it out. We are looking for ways to have our collections made out of one material so it is completely circular, which is the goal!

Consumer Awareness and Choices

As consumers become more environmentally conscious, they wield significant influence through their purchasing decisions. Supporting brands committed to sustainability sends a powerful message to the industry and encourages further innovation in eco-friendly practices. By making informed choices, individuals contribute to a more sustainable future for the fashion industry.

Do Good Swimwear is called Do Good, not only because of the sustainable practices and doing good for the Earth, but because of the positive environmental and social impact we have by donating a portion of profits to environmental and humanitarian causes we believe in, such as, Surfrider, Trees for the Future, Groundswell Community, Coral Gardeners and non profits supporting children in underserved areas. We believe you should not only look good while you do good, but feel good about it too!

Outlook is Bright

The tide is turning in favor of sustainable swimwear, driven by a growing awareness of environmental issues. From recycled materials to ethical production practices, the industry is undergoing a transformation that aligns with the values of eco-conscious consumers. So, the next time you hit the beach, consider making a splash in swimwear that not only flatters your style but also supports the health of our planet.

We hope this post has inspired you to support sustainable practices and make shopping for that new suit a bit easier, whether it be with us or another brand. Love to everyone, see you all for our return event this summer!

xx,

Jasmin
